| FAQ on Natural Hairdyes
| 15 October 2009 |
In the Daily Mail 15th October 2009,it was stated that the sales of home hair dyes are rocketing during the recession. We offer a great range of natural permanent and semi-permanent hair dyes called Naturtint, here are a few frequently asked questions which you may find useful.
Naturtint is available at Natural Health, Hertford and WGC or at http://www.naturalhealthwelwyn.co.uk/store/search/brand/Naturtint/
What is Naturtint and how does it differ from mainstream hair dyes? Naturtint is a less chemical permanent hair dye. Unlike most mainstream hair dyes Naturtint is free from harsh chemicals such as ammonia and resorcinol, which can be very irritating and aggressive on the hair and scalp. Naturtint is also free from parabens and contains active vegetable ingredients to help keep the hair looking and feeling healthy and selected certified organic ingredients. Is it possible to buy a completely Natural hair dye? Henna powder would be the only option available if you wanted a completely natural hair dye but unfortunately Henna is only available in a very limited number of shades all of which generally have a red tone to them. If you want 100% grey coverage and a selection of colours you do have to compromise and use a hair colorant range that uses some chemicals, but you don’t have to use a mainstream or salon brand, Naturtint is just as effective.
So will Naturtint cover all of my grey? Yes, Naturtint works in the same way as any other permanent hair dye but is considerably less aggressive on the hair and scalp.
I have had a reaction to a previous hair dye, is this one safe for me to use? It would depend on the ingredient /ingredients’ that you are allergic too. If you think that they have had a reaction too PPD then unfortunately you would not be able to use our permanent hair or any other brand as PPD is the ingredient needed for grey coverage. If you think it is the ammonia or resorcinol in a salon or mainstream dye that is irritating your skin you will be ok to use Naturtint provided a skin test is carried out 48 hours before use.
How do I carry out a skin test? It is VERY IMPORTANT to carry out a skin test and a test should be carried out EVERY TIME the hair is coloured. To carry out a skin test simply mix up a small amount of colour and developer in a glass or plastic bowl until totally blended. (Keep the unused colour and developer in their separate bottles with the lids on tightly). Apply a small amount of the mixture to a clean patch of skin behind the ear and on the inside of the elbow. Once dried, repeat the process twice more. Leave the mixture untouched for 48 hours. If no skin irritation is experienced after that length of time, such as swelling, redness, itching, burning, eczemas, etc then you can use Naturtint. OTHERWISE, DO NOT USE.
You have so many shades, how do I choose the best colour for my hair? Naturtint uses a similar numbering system as most salon & mainstream brands. The higher the number the lighter the colour e.g. 1 = darkest----10 = lightest. The letter after the number tells you what tone is in the shade N = Natural G = Golden A = Ash M = Mahogany C = Copper. When selecting a colour try and match your natural or darkest shade from the colour chart (This will usually be from the Natural section). From this shade you can go 2 shades lighter, add a tone or go darker. (As Naturtint is a less chemical dye it struggles to lighten the hair more than two shades at a time but you can go as dark as you like). If in doubt choosing between two shades, opt for the lighter as it is more flattering against ageing skin & grey re-growth is less obvious.
I only want to touch up the roots of my hair, do I have to use the whole box in one go? No, if you are just touching up your roots or patches of grey, have short hair or if you are mixing different colours together just mix up the amount of colorant and developer needed in a separate glass or plastic bowl, leaving the remaining colorant and developer in their own individual bottles with their tops on and they will both keep for several months.
I have previously gone to the salon to have a colour put on; can I put Naturtint over the top? It is very easy to change from using a mainstream or salon brand to using Naturtint, just choose a similar shade and carry out a skin & strand test before use, (It is often better to start with a Natural tone as this will ensure you are getting a good base).
I have previously used a henna on my hair; can I use Naturtint over the top? Henna dyes can be very persistent and remain on the hair for several weeks after application, which can therefore affect the uptake of a new colorant and interfere with the new colour result. We advise you wait 6 to 8 weeks before using Nautritnt after dying the hair with henna, and carry out a strand test before applying the colour to the hair.
Can I mix any of the shades? Although Naturtint is available in 29 shades, if you can’t find a shade that suits you can mix different Naturtint shades together so a customer can ‘design’ the perfect shade. Some combinations of course work better than others, but information should please feel free to call our helpline on 0845 601 8129.
How do I apply Naturtint? Inside the Naturtint box there will be a bottle of colourant, developer, conditioner, instructions and gloves. To mix the colour simply tip the colorant into the developer bottle and shake for 2 minutes, alternatively tip both bottles into a glass or plastic bowl and mix thoroughly with an applicator brush. (The colorant and developer always need to be mixed in equal parts). Before applying to the head apply a thin layer of Vaseline or barrier cream to the hair line to avoid colour staining the skin. Always ensure the hair is dry and free from any styling products before the hair is coloured as these will act as a barrier and can affect the final result. To apply the colour, section the hair and apply directly to the roots. Work all the mixture thoroughly and evenly through the hair, from roots to tips. (When using Naturtint for the first time it is advisable to colour the whole head as this will ensure you get a uniform base). Once the hair is completely covered, process for the desired length of time. Whilst the hair is processing gently massage the colour into the hair and move it around lifting the hair up using a tail comb to let the air get to the roots. When the processing time is up dampen the hair and lather up massaging around the hair line to ensure all the colour is removed from the skin. Once lathered, shampoo the hair using a gentle shampoo for coloured hair and condition with half the Nutrideep Multiplier that is in the box and leave for 5-10 minutes. (Leave the remaining Nutrideep Multiplier for use 2 weeks later. This will help with the condition and colour of the hair). Then dry and style the hair as normal.
I am pregnant/breastfeeding; can I use these hair colorants? Coloring hair whilst pregnant or breastfeeding is very much a personal decision – some ladies will stop colouring their hair altogether, whilst others will carry on regardless. Permanent hair dyes enter the hair shaft to de-colour and re-colour the hair, so some of the ingredients in the colorant can enter the blood stream. Most manufacturers of hair colorants would not therefore advise that a customer uses a permanent colorant whilst pregnant or breastfeeding. We also have a semi-permanent range called Reflex which is free from Ammonia, Resorcinol, Peroxide and PPD which means instead of it entering the hair shaft like a permanent hair dye it can only sit on the outside of the hair like a stain and gradually fades away the more the hair is shampooed. Therefore Reflex is a range we would be more inclined to recommend provided a skin test is carried out 48 hours before use.
